German Typing Test Online
TalionType's German typing test uses authentic German vocabulary including umlauts (ä, ö, ü, ß) across all difficulty levels. Full feature parity — ghost races, local leaderboard, daily challenges, and typing certificates.
Good German typing speed?
The German average is 35–45 WPM. Professional typists aim for 65–85 WPM. Over 100 WPM is considered exceptional. German compound words (Wettbewerbsfähigkeit) make hard mode particularly challenging — and great practice.
Tips for German typing
Master the umlauts: ä, ö, ü, and ß. On a QWERTZ layout these are conveniently placed; on QWERTY, configure alt codes or a German keyboard layout. German compound words reward typists who can maintain rhythm through long words.
How WPM is calculated
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Umlauts each count as one character. German words are longer on average than English, so WPM scores tend to be slightly lower. Full formula →
